Quick XXX History
Once upon a time (1968, to be precise), the Motion Picture Association of America introduced a new rating to indicate that content was only suitable for adults, it was simply the letter “X.” In the ’70s, the adult industry adopted the “X” and took it further, as only they could, and added a couple of more, making XXX really drive home that their movie was…well, we’ll let White Goodman from Dodgeball explain…
The ’70s & ’80s…and early ’90s
Are you old enough to remember a time when VHS tapes with XXX emblazoned across the box were something you snuck into your house and hid in your closet? Or maybe you snuck a magazine from your old man’s not-so-secret collection? Like the “X” rating, also established in 1968 was Penthouse Forum and it too gained popularity throughout the 70s. Your mental spank bank now included a solid catalogue of erotic writings from which to source. In my opinion, stories were easier because they were discrete and oh so much more convenient than turning the volume all the way down on the one TV in the house and watching a VHS tape while keeping one eye over your shoulder. Oh the struggles of the pre-internet generations.
Back then porn was wildly naughty, and if you got caught it was the ultimate in parental punishment. But, damn it, it was worth the risk. You could watch porn, and unlike your Algebra homework, fully commit it to memory for use until you got the chance to watch it again. If you couldn’t watch porn, you could discretely peruse the pictures and stories in a dirty magazine.
The point is, remember when your imagination was the key to your sex life? The options before XNXX were:
- Reimagine the story/scene
- Imagine you were in the story/scene
- Replace the characters and build a better one
- Do a mash up of your memorized porns and stories
Back then, the only limitations were your imagination…and your endurance.
XXX Today
XXX sites are everywhere these days. Just an inkling of desire, a few keywords, and poof! your fantasy plays out right before your eyes. Needs are filled quickly, another person in the room is optional. This is why I advocate for using porn – videos or literary erotica – as a sex toy. I’d much rather see porn bring you and your partner together, rather than unintentionally tear you apart.
Affordable Sex Toys

Erotica is a sex toy and amidst the best selling genres. It stimulates your mind differently than watching porn. And if you need a reminder, the mind is the ultimate sex organ. It’s interesting – so many people are reading about sex, yet still uncomfortable talking about it. I digress…anyway – Amazon has millions of books and short stories on their platform. A quick search of the Kindle Store for XXX and you’ll get more than 30,000 results. Search “erotica” and you’ll get more than 60,000. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, you can read for free. If not, there are many authors offering free promos, inexpensive titles, and short stories for about a dollar.
Sex Ed – XXX Lesson
Of course, what is the point of anything if you don’t learn from it…including your sex toys and tools? Porn, erotica, or whatever you fancy teaches you about yourself. Approach your sexual pleasure from a place of deeper awareness and you will nurture your libido and stoke the fires of passion by exercising your imagination. After all, imagination is the greatest sex toy, and what’s even better…it’s free.
